Moving in, out, around sound
Solo exhibition, Linus Bonduelle
30 June — 14 July 2022 Opening Reception: 30 June, from 18.00
Linus Bonduelle's Moving in, out, around sound is an installation of new sculptural and sound works. Moving in, out, around sound is the first solo exhibition of Bonduelle's work in Rotterdam, where the artist lives and works. During the month preceding the exhibition, Bonduelle lived in the exhibition space and apartment, which is usually the home of Available & The Rat Director Niloufar Nematollahi, and which was previously the home of Available & The Rat Director Lili Huston-Herterich.
Intrigued by the sounds created inside the home, as well as those on the peripheries of the domestic realm, Bonduelle has created sculptures that are temporary assemblages of sonic and visual elements reminding us of the warm, yet noisy, and sometimes hostile spaces we remember as “home.” Each sculpture consists of found domestic objects and a speaker with a unique soundtrack: familiar sounds of the home; and a voice, stating memories in which sound plays a profound role.
Excerpt from the exhibition essay:
I think back to the moments in which my illusion of silence was penetrated by the sound of cars, boxes and the humming of a pop song. These sounds make the idea and the memory of home tangible for me. Linus and I are not sharing the house anymore, so he uses his webcam to show me the sculptures he has made since I left: assemblages of the objects and sounds that made our home, temporarily brought together by lashing straps. While he talks to me, he adds little objects I recognize from what used to be his bedroom and living room onto the sculpture: “each sculpture is an aesthetic Spiel, as if you’re decorating your home” he tells me. The tension, which ‘makes' the home, emerges from the homemakers’ quest to balance functionality and aesthetics.”
